Dearest Mother
Proverbs 31:1
The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.
Dearest Mother,
I have been endeavouring to abide by your instructions, and I think it is helping my attitude. I do need to remember that my husband married me to produce children for him. That is, of course, a most proper attitude and does explain much of his actions and attitudes. Certainly his mother and sisters, at our wedding, made it quite clear that I am expected to produce several children in short order; and I am sure that they made that clear to him as well.
He is his own man, but when they speak to him about something that is correct I am sure that he listens to them. And Scripture makes it very clear that children are a blessing, and that a man is supposed to produce and support progeny. I don’t believe I had sufficiently prepared myself before marriage for that emphasis.
You asked about my maid. She and I are still getting on very well together. My husband allows me perfect liberty to run and swim, and she accompanies me in all of my activities. She cannot swim but she assures me that if I have problems in the water she will scream loud enough to bring various men that can swim. I have spoken of teaching her, but she is very water-shy.
My poachers are quite enjoyable. They seem to take great pleasure in accosting me during my walk and showing me their various treasures. I have not yet reconciled myself to dead animals and birds, but their pleasure makes me reluctant to refuse.
I had a very interesting time the other day. Apparently, our estate has a charity fund and the houskeeper and I discussed its utilization…

As well as GK Chesterton’s wonderful book, “What’s Wrong with the World”, for which ‘Arthur’ wrote most of the annotations. The book is a series of essays on how modern politics has gotten the wrong prescription for the wrong diagnosis.
